Being yourself? Insecurities. Does it get you anywhere in High School

Being yourself? Insecurities. Does it get you anywhere in High School?
PLEASE. Don't answer if you're going to tell me 'just get over it and get off the internet' cos really, I'm trying! I'm in high school in Australia and it's quite hard, socially that is. If you're not popular, you never will be because people's opinions have already stuck in their minds even if they don't pay attention to you. That's my problem. I am not popular but I'm not one of the people that popular kids bully (which is good). So yeah okay, I just get insecure at all the popular/average kids (socially). They're so pretty (!), confident, full of life and they have interesting things to say which make them have many friends. Whereas I, I am funny to my friends but if I compare myself to anyone I feel that I am lame and boring. I have no style at all and I'm not what you call attractive... I am weird in a way, but I'm not even known for that, I'm just boring (only one guy has said that but even so) and I can't talk to anyone who's outside my circle of friends. I get chances to talk to people but I don't use those opportunities to make friends because I'm too shy. But I may also be considered SO annoying which I want to stop... :S and yeah guys... seriously how on earth do you talk to teenage guys? I don't know what to talk about. I believe that I will never ever date in high school (even though I have twice BEFORE high school) and never go out with anyone all my life seeing as I'm so boring. I'm not a sad teenager, to be honest, I'm quite bubbly. But it's like I can talk online but not in real life which may freak some people out. So to sum this up (this didnt make much sense) all I'm asking is how to talk to people, how not to be shy and how to get over myself due to all my insecurities. I don't want to be popular, I just want to be me. And I don't need to be liked, I just want to be respected. But how am I going to start respecting myself? Or at least be happy with what I have? Seriously though, about the interesting part... my humour isn't dark it's very lame really and one would get bored of me for sure but yeah, as I said, I'm funny to my friends; I'm not some person who's so deep or has got past experiences that have made me so... shy. I'm not intellectual at all and not smart but I get A's. Argh.... :S Thanks for the answers :)

FYI every high school is the same all across the world, and many of the things you feel about yourself all these insecurities so does everyone else even these bullies thats why they do it because they need to put other people down to make them feel better and powerful and mighty! Dont listen to what there opinions of you are because as long as your friends like you who cares about others. You never know when ure older they may end up in a dead end job and be looking for you to help them out. Its calme- i t will come back and bitethem on the bum. DO NOT LISTEN to what they say be yourself and if the person likes you you willbe comfortable but you need to stop listening to the bullies because this is what makes you shy because you are believeing what they say :)
2 :
you need confidence, to begin with. seriously, everyone has insecurities (even those cool smart ppl), but they ignore the insecurties don't they? so thats what you gotta do! how you can get over your insecurities? well, start by doing someting that makes you feel good about yourself, like go work out or get a makeover or a new hairstyle or try something you havent... you'll be left feeling good. next, you say you're bubbly, so go talk to people. there's always someone to talk to, and if you don't have many friends, then start by saying hi and stuff. you'll get over your shyness and insecurity at the same time. also, stop comparing yourself to other ppl, cuz face it, you'll never be like them, and more importantly, THEY'LL NEVER BE LIKE YOU! if you want to be a more interesting person, try watching tv shows and stuff that others talk about, so that you'll atleast have a clue about what's going on (even if you don't really like the show, just watch it! or read about it on wikipedia ;) )...if you think you're lame, then you are! try reading jokes, being a little sarcastic (in the nice way) and you're good to go! alsoo...its not a must to date anyone, its great bing single! good luck and i really hope this makes sense (lol) :)
3 :
tch.......anyone tells you to get over it and get off the net can suck a fat one. this happens to millions upon millions of kids. its why teenage shows are the way they are(not the crappy unfunny part, but the reflective of how bad high school was) im in the U.S so take your high school experience and multiply that by lets say uhh.......infinity..yeah thats the perfect number. you said no but any kid bullies you u need to learn how to beat the brakes off them. full brake alignment. and if your high schools like the U.S, those popular kids dont have anything interesting, gossip, drama, all that useless crap that wont do shit for you......trust me in a few years that will all be irrelevant. all the popular kids i knew either got knocked up or fat,(their bodies went all fun house mirrior on them) or workin at walmart now, even both. again, when you get older all that "interesting" stuff they said will sound dumb as hell. alot of us have insecurities, they do as well such as the ones that bully. thats part of why, along with peer pressure. if your not lame nor boring, dont worry about it, you also gotta know how u think others perceive you is much different then reality in most cases, not all but most. and we are all weird in a way, but some love to either hide it or be weird in groups and well...majority rules so...eh. and you do have style, your own style, and if you show confidence and possibly a lil sass in there, ull be fine. i promise, you have to be balls out and confident in yourself, otherwise no one else will beleive it either. like ugly guys pulling beautiful women, they dont need money completely although it helps, but the confidence is what attracts. and u gotta do whatever makes you comfortable, being social just isnt in some peoples cards. but if you want to be, take that one step forward.. no one else will do it for you. hate to sound like a dick but most teenage guys are into sex, u talk about that or even mention the word ull have full attention. i garentee it. or u find a guy u like and get to know him, ask him what he likes, other then that theirs no better way then the direct answer. and how to talk to people.....just be yourself, become comfortable with yourself around others in public, master yourself(not zen BS) once you are, u become confident, relaxed, cool and collected. u can say whatever you want then. and people will find how interesting you are. in the end toots just remember, all your good qualities, ive never met you obviously and this maybe the last time i ever speak to you. but remember this. popular kids talk about dumbass shit all the dumbass time. i poop out more important matters. a real life jet pack is interesting(They exist google it, a fish with a see through head...awesome... french maids pillow fighting...much...MUCH...more interesting...(MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAA). be comfortable and strong with who you are, and dont let anyone take that from you. tell em to suck it if they try. guys like me,well...all of us like sex, but if u dont want that, just ask them up front what they like, innocent question so theirs no big issue there. if they find issue their nuts or retarded. once your comfortable, you can project onto the world what kind of cool person you are. remember toots, you only have one life to live, screw the big issues, and try to enjoy it. ull problaby have alot more to face in life like we all do. so think of this as really small issues, its easier said then done yes, but u do what u gotta do toots, and .... just...do whatever makes you happy.. no matter what. p.s screw you yahoo spell checker, you unclean whore stop correctin me.

www.expedia.com --- check it out, it will give you comparison for fare from different airlines.
2 :
Get on the net and start looking, or go to your nearest travel agent. Also, at 15 I don't quite see why you are looking at our schools. You can't come here to study without your parents at that age. Who is going to pay your airfare? You would not get a visa to enter Australia unaccompnied at your age anyway.

Will American employers look down on a graduate degree from the UK or Australia

Will American employers look down on a graduate degree from the UK or Australia?
I'm flirting with the idea of going to grad school in England or Australia (I'm American). Would this hurt my career if I decide to work in the US after I graduate? Do American employers look unfavorably upon degrees from other non-American English-speaking countries?

i would have though it would be more prestigious! im doing my degree in the UK and love it!
2 :
I think that a company that would look down on a graduate degree from the UK or Australia would be a company you wouldn't want to work for. We are becoming a much more global society every day, every second actually and the more globally educated a person is, the bigger the asset they would be to an organization. (Read anything written by Thomas Friedman - he is one fo the formost experts on globalization). I actually work in the study abroad industry and I have worked in university admissions. I know for a fact that admissions (as well as the work force) is so competitive nowadays that you HAVE to set yourself apart from the rest of the herd. Studying abroad is a great way to do that. Also, make sure that you go into a graduate program that is really reputable - don't join a graduate program just because it is in the UK, join it because it is the most progressive / best / reputable, etc in that industry. That is really what matters in a graduate degree - the university supplying that degree has to be in the top of the field for those studies. That is where you will gain that credibilty, no matter where in the world you study.
3 :
I think a lot of it depends on what kind of degree you want and where you want to work. I wouldn't have thought so (I'm getting a degree here in the UK now), but some of my previous college professors questioned my decision to leave the US. This is strange because I already have a degree from a university in the US and the quality of learning is much higher in the UK. I agree with the statement above--anyone who looks down on it is probably not someone you want to work for. There are a lot of narrow-minded people out there.
4 :
Doubt it. To be sure I decided to do my PhD here in the U.S. then find some post-doc position in Ireland or the U.K. in order to get the overseas experience and build my C.V. Everyone is different, but that is my plan anyway.

First day of school Poll Uniforms or not

First day of school Poll Uniforms or not?
I see a lot of people posting questions about what to wear on the first day of school. In australia we wear uniforms, so theres no competition about what clothes who's got on, everyone is equal, in that respect, so theres no presure on parents to, try to keep up with the jones's type mentality they yall got going in the US. Do you think uniforms would be a better option? I personally like uniforms, then you dont have to have a huge wardrobe, that ur going to grow out of anyway, and you dont have to worry about what your going to wear, seems like it would solve a lot of issues among teens in the US. The other thing is, i've never dated a girl becos she had better clothes on then another, I choose by personality first and azz second body curves third and face last, clothes dont even vector into the equation. Food for thought

No uniforms. When you get to wear your own clothes, you express your individuality, and that's always good.
2 :
DEFINITELY. Especially coming from a girls' perspective, girls are always competing over being the best dressed or looking better than someone else. plus it puts extra stress on how we look, not to mention makeup and hair. I wish we had uniforms in public schools because it would save time and stress
3 :
I agree! Uniforms are better. I've been to private school all my life... It's so much easier with uniform. I don't have to panic about what to wear everyday, or if I already wore the same things already or something.
4 :
I go to school in Canada and I don't wear a uniform. I know that all the private schools in my area require uniforms though. I guess the good thing about uniforms would be that I wouldn't spend that much time deciding what to wear. Also, you're right about the whole competition thing. Some uniforms are kind of cute too. That might just be me. I like wearing my own clothes because I got to create my own individual style and learn how to shop for clothes that are right for me and all that.. Its fun dressing up. Personally, I'd be up for uniforms if we had to get them. But life without them is cool too.
5 :
Thats great that youre all into uniforms and understand how they can be more convenient than free dress. But just so you know, there are private schools here in the US that require the kids to wear uniforms. I went to a private school for 9 years and had to wear a uniform and i dont think i complained all that much about it. However when i went to high school i switched to a public school, so i didnt have to wear a uniform anymore. I love it and i dont really think theres any "competition." People just wear what they like and what they feel comfortable in. So i personally dont think that uniforms would be a better option.

Help me convert my high school results to an SAT score

Help me convert my high school results to an SAT score?
I finished high school in Australia, I took the TEE, not the SAT, which resulted in a grade known as the TER, which is the percentage of other students that I scored higher than. my TER is 96.05, (so I was in the top 3.95% of my year) as a guide, a TER of 80 will get you into a commerce degree in the countries most selective business school, engineering ranges from 85-95 law is from 96 and above medicine is 98-99 I am preparing a resume to apply for jobs in America and would like to supply them an estimate of my SAT score by comparison, so what is it? just to clarify, what SAT would get you into law at a good school, but not medicine? why would I be on 1400? this page says 1500 is the average, so wouldn't 1400 be pretty bad? http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_1400_a_good_SAT_score
Standards & Testing - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
The SAT gets you into University for an undergraduate (bachelors) degree. The SAT is a general test for everyone and while there are subject tests, they don't really have an bearings on what you study at University. If you're in the top 4%, you would have scored a 1400 or so on the SAT although you shouldn't write that on a job application. The tests are different and you may come across as dishonest. Just write that you fell in the top 3.95 percentile for your standardized test. EDIT: I meant 1400 out of 1600 which was the way it used to be scored. Find a conversion table from old to new to figure it out.
2 :
I suggest that you do not try to make an estimation. For one thing, you do not have an accurate source to make a conversation. Write down what you have on your employment application and add that there is no SAT in Australia. Explain TEE to them. Secondly, you cannot simply get into law school or medical school in United States. You have to do really well in undergraduate, perform stellar in standardized tests, and do well in interviews. You have to be U.S. citizen or permanent resident as well. There are exceptions, but very rare.
3 :
They are completely different - you sit a specific test for SAT AS WELL AS the tests for your subjects to finish your final year at school. The scores are not comparable. Australian students don't sit a separate uni entrance exam - its like saying I got 90% in year 12 music - what AMEB exam score is that? It doesn't make sense.
4 :
The SAT is for the undergraduate degree. US colleges do not teach medicine or law at the undergrad level. Even if you have taken the TEE, you must take the SAT.
5 :
the SAT doesnt work that way at all there is no set score for suggesting what career you would be successful in it is a general test to assess how well your reasoning is the score is used to see how successful you will be in a college enviroment it has no effect on your proffesional choice... granted people with higher scores tend to go into proffesions such as law, medicine, and enginerring... and what job are you looking for b.c the SAT is taken after high school and companies could careless what you scored just colleges... idk if your test is after hs or after uni but if its after hs you still need to go get a college degree and yea 1400 is terrible

He says it is a very big deal as you have to get your application sponsored by people that know your work and that they have to be the 'right people'. There is another film school in LA, same deal and that is it for top film schools in the USandA. Expensive, complicated and very competitive.

Many schools run Before and After School Care programs and they are also provided by a large number of childcare centres and other organizations. http://www.careforkids.com.au/search/regions.asp?stateID=6&ut=4&ctype=6 http://www.victoria.ymca.org.au/cpa/htm/htm_article.asp?page_id=43 Search on 'before and after school care victoria' and 'oshc victoria' for more. Charges vary and Childcare Benefits (CCB) may be available to eligible parents.

try send her to a school that includes after school care. you will have to most likely pay for it

school usually goes till 3.30 and most schools have an after school program. When looking at schools make sure that the school has one. They are usually open till 6pm . As to cost it can vary, so you will need to ask the school

Should I move to Banff when I finish high school

Should I move to Banff when I finish high school?
I'm currently 18 years old and completing my final year of high school in Australia. I have a permanent residence visa for Australia, but I'm a British citizen. I'm considering moving to Banff to start out in a place I absolutely love. I'd be looking to get a job when I get there. Any advice on how practical this would be for someone coming straight out of school? Visas, expenses, etc. All responses would be appreciated. I am interested in moving Banff upon the completion of high school. Unlike most people, I am looking to make Banff my home in the long term. My current location is in Australia although I am of British origin. Could anyone assist me with information on moving to Banff and how applicable this venture would be for someone like myself? Is it easy to find employment that can sustain the housing costs in Banff? Would it be a financial strain moving to Banff for someone just starting out? Hope you can help!! * I am looking to make either Banff or Canmore my permanent home for at least 5 to 6 years * I would be applying for my visa from the United Kingdom (as I plan to return there briefly beforehand) * The cold winters are something I look forward to * I am prepared to live in Canmore and commute although sharing accommodation is not something that appeals to me * I prepared to work hard and start off in any post for the short term

If that is where you want to go, then so be it. Just show up and you will have to make it all work.
2 :
If you are flexible with what kind of job you are looking for. Wing it, come out and you can work your way into the job you really want. Research your visas before you come, Aussies come and go quite frequently from here and are notorious for saying they will stay for a year and bail out early - so if employers are skeptical and don't want to help you out with visas it is because you can thank all the backpackers that come and go so frequently from here. It is a great place so I would recommend coming to Banff. Many employers will find you accommodations and there are tons of people to show you around and hand out with. Have an idea of what you want first before you come out. Accommodations - don't be put off by staff accommodations at first. You may find it easy to move into a staff accommodation for a week while you search the newspapers for something a little better. It makes your life a little easier to work and live in Banff but many do commute from Canmore to Banff - it is just a little more challenging to go for a few drinks or a hike up tunnel after work. I am sure you will find what you are looking for! By the way - you do not need to know many languages to work in Banff. It is a myth that you need to know Japanese and German to work in a shop, etc... It is also a myth that we are the HIV capital of Canada. Check out our hospital - it specializes in sports injuries (expecially knees) I have lived here for 10 years and yet to know anyone in this small town of 8000 people with HIV...
3 :
Banff is an expencive place to live and you need to have a job in the town to live there. A lot of people get summer jobs right out of high school. If they don't get employee housing they ussually have to share a house with a bunch of friends. But if you wanted to live there permenently you would either need an education so you can get a high paying job or start your own business. I have met people from the UK and Australia who got working holiday visas. You should probably contact the Canadian consulate for more info about that. I highly doubt you will have enough points to immigrate permenently coming straight out of high school.
4 :
If you want to work retail, you need to speak Japanese, or German. You can work in hotels. You must get a job first to obtain housing in Banff. Unless you own a business, or work for parks, or have a highly educated job, you will need to stay in staff housing. There are some spots for rent, but you will not be able to afford it unless mom, and dad can help. Also, Banff is the HIV capital of Canada. Sweet place to visit.
5 :
You are going to find it difficult to get a visa for Canada. If you would like to stay in Canada for a number of years, you would have to immigrate. Canadian Immigration only accepts people with documented skills or trades, and work experience who stand a good chance of getting a job. There is probably at least a two year wait for that visa. As you are just finishing school you would not qualify for a full visa. There is a working holiday temporary visa, that you might be eligible for. You have left it a little late for this winter. If you went the holiday visa route, you will find it very expensive to live around the ski areas and difficult to find a job or accomodation. New people usually work for minimum wage and a ski pass, and share rooms. Hope you find something.
6 :
Banff is a beautiful town but also a very expensive place to live, especially during the tourist season in the summer. Most of the employment is in the tourism sector so being able to cook would be an asset. Ski instructor at Lake Louise in the winter, 1st aid attendant, working in a hotel in the maintenance department, check in clerk, chamber maid, housekeeping, transit driver. Clerking in the various stores and shops. These are all options but it could be difficult getting yourself established. You might find Banff quite boring in the winter due to the cold winters and heavy snow. If you enjoying skiing then welcome to paradise.

G'day, You can certainly apply to the Group of 8, however you must be sure that one of the universities do offer the major that you want. Some may argue that the university belongs to The Group of 8 (www.go8.edu.au) are the 'famous' one. However they group was formed just to unify the promotional effort. The members cannot claim that they are the best at everything that they offers. There are only 42 (soon to be 43) universities in Australia, all of them are fully accredited and they are tightly regulated, therefore the quality and recognition of their graduates are equal from wherever university you are studying from. The most important thing is you have to READ the course information carefully, since some courses may have the same name but different content. The most important thing for you is not the university but the course. I suggest you to go to Dept of Education, Science and Technology (http://cricos.dest.gov.au) and IDP Education Australia website (www.idp.edu.au) online databases. Please make sure that you access the information for international students, since some requirements, application form and fees are different than Australians'. Once decided on the uni, fill in the application form and send it together with certified copy of your academic qualification. Depending on your country of origin, you may also need to submit an IELTS test results for proof of your English proficiency (www.ielts.org) So with many options for your to choose, this is my suggestion to narrow down your choice: 1. Choose the city you want to study in. The consideration maybe the lifestyle, living cost and weather. 2. Find the area that you want to work/career in. Check if the uni's are offering the area. Hope this helps. Good luck for your study and welcome to Australia :)

I would recommend the "GROUP OF EIGHT" universities in Australia...

our public schools are free, but it's not as simple as that. there's visas and things to think about
3 :
Actually our public high school are NOT free for non-PR residents. You have to pay around 4-6K per year for a public school Australians pay nothing for (its 4K for grade 1 - increases for high school). That is a common misconception people have because Australians and PR visa holders pay nothing. If you are on a tourist visa, student visa, or non perm work visa (your parents that is) all children have to pay a significant amount to go to public school. That is why most international school students go to private school - as its not that much more (about 2x more). You will also be required to pay boarding costs which will be around 6-10K if you can get in (boarding places are competitive and international students are the last in line for these places).

Why are Private School Kids Payed out

Why are Private School Kids Payed out?
Why do they Stereotype Private Schoolers Our family are very fortunate, and happen to be very wealthy multi millionaires. And we all go to the best private schools in Australia and such things like this, But thats not our fault is it. We are simply living the life we were given, and are gratfull. The state school kids come and steal our ipods and said ''Shut the fuck up you preppy suns of bitches just ask mummy and daddy for a new one, go back to your mantions and cry''...this has been stuck in my head they all think we have these perfect lives. We arent Barbie dolls. And if you look nice you get Hit! like the other day on the train, these girls walked up to my best friend courtenay and i and slapped us we asked why, we didnt do anything to you?....Because we have Blonde hair and Blue eyes?? has that ever happened. I found this so Bizzare!. I mean .....i am lost for words with this subgect. What is your Oppinion? We have been taught better than to be snobby about it! Silly second asnwer considering that australia pays one of the highest tax Umm again 2nd answer denmark what has denmark got to do with my parents sending me to a private school were not so rich we can get countries out of poverty wow you are very stupid i disagreeed with everythign you said 1st answer jsut because i go to a private school doesnt mean i am smart! buy a brain Oh no i spelt mansion wrong and probably did again! wow my private school didnt make me perfect what a crime its ppl liek the first two answers that no absolutly nothing about private school kids there the same as you my parents worked hard! to get to were they are today it wasnt GIVEN TO THEM so dont tell me to give to society like as if we have money to throw around i cant beleive how nieve you are there are onley a few private schools were i live and there are about 15 state schools probably more so id bequit i bet you have come from a diffrent countrey

Unfortunately, your very expensive private schooling failed to teach you basic grammar and punctuation.
2 :
Well if you are so rich you should share your wealth and then the state school kids would have a better education. PAY MORE TAX and GIVE more TO SOCIETY ! Pay for the state school kids to have MORE privileges, like pay for some more teachers, CLOSE your private school and reopen it as a STATE school for everyone ! Or move to Denmark, only state schools and DECENT people !
3 :
I went to a private high school (grades 7-12), but my family is far from being rich! I got there through a full scholarship that I competed for while I applied to the school. Even when I went to college...I was on a scholarship....and med school.....I am on a scholarship....So just because you go to a great school, It does not make you this rich and spoiled stereotype.
4 :
often they're jealous and judgemental because look how much more private schools generally offer, its something to be jealous of they just havent seen both sides of the story.
5 :
it may not have been given to your parents but it was given to you. so you didn't earn anything. and you don't necessarily look good just because you have blonde hair and blue eyes. i know some blonde blue eyed people that are ugly as sh!t so thats probably not why they slapped you.
6 :
Do not listen to all these negative, jealous comments. You are lucky to be in situation and i am sure ur family has worked hard to get there. It all comes down to jealousy, just become yourself and excel in everything u do. Follow ur dreams to find ur inner self and never let anyone bully because u are rich, gorgeous and looking after ur appearance.. Jealousy is a curse, what u put in is what u receive u nasty people, good luck babe x

man dont let those girls get you down man u betta swing on one of those hoes next time they try u

is it possible to transfer into an ivy league school for your last year of studies

is it possible to transfer into an ivy league school for your last year of studies?
Hi, I'm currently finishing my first semester in university, I've gone from barely scraping through high school to being a straight A university student. I'm confident I can keep a gpa of 4.0, and extremely confident about the interviews concerning ivy league schools. But next year I was planning to do an exchange with a school in Australia rather than transfer into an ivy league school. I was wondering if it's possible for me to transfer into say Harvard, or any other ivy league school for that part for the last year of my bachelor's program? or do they require you to complete all four years at that ivy league school?
Higher Education (University +) - 2 Answers

most top tier schools require at least 2 years there. They will also give preference to freshman. If this is what you want to do, apply to transfer as early as possible. There is no reason why you can't do a study abroad program in australia at an ivy league school as well.
2 :
No. Most universities require you to earn at least 1/2 of your credits with them in order to grant you a degree. Though you could make it any two of the 4 years.

Hairstyles for school.

Hairstyles for school..?
...well I am Australian/Irish. So I go to school in Australia, and I have brown dark hair, blue eyes. I need a good hairstyle besides my same old, left side fringe to side and hair tied up straight. I dont like wavy hair styles as i feel like it looks like you havent brushed your hair lol, so I straighten mine and I dont like curls either. I have to have a side fringe... to the left... i think I dont know, like I feel weird if I dont wear a fringe to school lol. umm besides that yeah, any suggestions? pictures or sources, you can try and talk me into something out of my comfort zone lol. xx

what about this ?
2 :
is your hair naturally straight? if your in aussie go to the beach or let your hair dry natural then do two fishtail plaits or leave it natural or french plaits or plaited fringe and messy bun
3 :
messy bun :D just use ur fingers and grab ur hair into a pony tail then twist it up and then wrap it around itself and use a elastic and tie it around the bun u made. leave ur fringe out u can do a half up one sided loose plait with ur fringe out. looks great. its all over runways.
4 :
Shave your noggin clean, and then buy a wig or two? :) Or just copy the other kids.
5 :
Unconventional Braids # While you might not be young enough to rock the braided pigtails anymore, you can add a bit of fun to a ponytail or hair worn down by tucking small braids into unexpected places. You can try french braiding your bangs to the side and gradually down the length of your hair, or braid a few strands here and there. If the braids are small enough, they can behave like the rest of your hair and stay down and loose or go up into a bun or ponytail when it's time to exercise.

Boarding school grief

Boarding school grief?
I'm gay. I've known for quite a few years, but I haven't told anyone and I'm not sure when I'm going to. I don't act in a way that would make people think I'm gay; only really close people might begin to suspect. Or thats what I think, anyway lol. This year I moved into boarding school at an all boys school in Australia and made a load of great new friends, namely my first roommate, who is now my best friend. We hang out together all the time, constantly in each other's rooms and watching movies together all day. He doesn't know that I'm gay (nobody does), and my problem is that I think I'm in love with him. Or just a realy strong crush sorta thing. No idea. I really think that I should come out to him, but I'm not sure if I should or how he'll take it. I trust him, but I'm not sure if, after only a year of knowing each other, I should tell him. I'm 15, he's 16, and he's definately straight. I hate having to dodge questions and subjects to cover up what I can't change. What do I do?

If you feel that he will be accepting of you then you should tell him, but don't if you think he may turn on you or out you to the whole school or something equally as ghastly. However if you simply can't live without telling him then you should try.
2 :
Ignore that first answerer, and keep this in mind. Whether it is hetrosexual or homosexual, relationships ruin friendships. Although I'm straight, and wouldn't really know how to come out, you should tell your friend you are gay, but don't tell him that you love him. A best friend is never worth losing.
3 :
Only you can feel out this situation. You may have a crush on him or you may feel a connection to him but is it enough to take the risk? This guy may be willing to experiment with you if he did not know that you are gay. You may have a better chance if you just called this an experiment rather than coming out.Be prepared to date a girl that he sets you up with if he dose anything with you. He may want to return the favor if he dose anything with you.Good luck.
4 :
If you've known him for this long, get into a discussion that includes a gay topic. See how he reacts. Let him know you want to share some personal info with because you trust him. Ask him if he is ok keeping your personal business business personal. You can let him know that if it bothers him, you will change rooms. Try to be real positive. Contact the gay center, the gay hot line and pflag.org and ask for some support. Life is short -- be happy.
5 :
awwww <33333 oh, and all boys school eh? ;) aha! well I don't know, he seems like a nice guy, but bring it up like just beat around the bush (..well, not *literally* ^_^) but say something like "my friend just came out to me over the phone" or something, and maybe pretend that it bothers you or something, idk. but see how he reacts. say, "i don't know what to say to him...what would you say?" and if he's all cool with it then he's all cool with you. ^-^ now you also have a crush on him, that's a bit different, get drunk with him sometime (it's easier to say things when drunk and he might take it easier, i'm talking about if you decide to tell him how you feel about him..) good luck!

6 :
There is no evidence any god exists. Am I supposed to have a problem with this? Even the Christians maintain that there is no evidence. That's why it's called FAITH!
7 :
"...students will soon be able to take religious education classes which teach there is no evidence God exists." Well, that's a true statement. Or do you maybe HAVE any evidence a god exists?
8 :
I'm Christian, and this is fantastic! Not everyone shares my faith, and that's great to see kids getting other views. Besides if anyone has a serious bitch fest about it, the kids don't have to take it. Well Done Australia!
9 :
From the article:"Victorian state primary school students will soon be able to take religious education classes which teach there is no evidence God exists. " There is no evidence. Shouldn't even people who believe in a god be honest about this? We keep being told it doesn't mean no gods exist. Something about faith.
10 :
Sounds fair. If parents don't want their children to attend that section of the class they aren't required to.
11 :
I think it's great. I much rather have a class that teaches ethics and morals can exist without a god versus a class to study the bible(Texas).
12 :
I think it's wonderful.
13 :
Good for them. As the article says, they also have people of different religions come in as well, and any parent can take their children out if they are offended. It's really not that difficult, if the knee-jerk religious types in America would calm down for a minute we could have a decent dialogue, kids included.
14 :
I personally don't feel religion should be any part of school, just like it shouldn't be in with the politics. They aren't forcing the children to attend the classes, so I don't see any real harm in it, but I don't see the need to waste another hour of schooling to teach religion when they get that teaching in church each week, and education could be put to better use in that extra hour.
15 :
Its optional, from what i understand, so i really don't care. But how can you teach that God doesn't exist because there is no proof? That would not be a very large curriculum.
16 :
hahahaha, some people are going to get pissed. but it makes sense, there is no evidence for a god, so i don't see why it shouldn't be taught.
17 :
The headline says that children are taught there is no God. In the article it says children are taught "...there is no evidence God exists." These are two different claims in fact. By the way, the second claim is certainly true. I don't know how the school system in Australia works, if religious instruction is mandatory etc. I live in America and I do not advocate instructing children in public schools as to what their religious beliefs should or should not be. There should be a religious studies class which simply conveys what the core beliefs of the world's religions are. That is simply part of being an educated person.

It's a fairly nice outfit, but you may want to cover up, just in case it is a Christian school. And you just have to ask your past teachers on recommendations (or people you babysat for).... Otherwise, good luck on getting into the school.

Come out now or wait till post-high-school? (More details inside)

Come out now or wait till post-high-school? (More details inside)?
Ok, I've known I was gay for awhile now, and last few years I've really come to terms with it myself. There's still the matter of coming out to others though. Anyway... I'm currently in my final year of High School in Australia, with less than half a year left until my HSC (High School Certificate) before I leave and can then get into university. My grades are fine, but lately the issue of coming out has really been playing on my mind and I don't know when I should come out - now or wait until university - due to a variety of reasons: 1) Like I said, the thought is becoming a distraction. I mean, it's a selective school and the environment is fairly supportive, plus I feel like I have some good friends who I'd be able to tell first off, and my family doesn't seem overtly homophobic. It's more the reaction of the general community, acquaintances, etc, that I'm concerned about. That, and I don't want to necessarily lose any friends whom I wouldn't have expected to react negatively. 2) Graduation and the end of school Formal (or Prom I guess) is coming up. Obviously the whole date thing poses a problem. Even if I came out, I doubt I'd be at a stage by then to bring a same-sex date, especially since I don't exactly know many gay people my age anyway. Then there's the option of just going with a girl date who would presumably be a friend, but of course I wouldn't really know how to act in that situation considering my orientation, and I wouldn't want things between me and said friend (whoever I theoretically ended up taking) becoming awkward once I come out. Third option would be to go alone and just hang out with friends and their dates, but... I don't want to be "that guy who just hangs out with everyone else's dates" whilst being alone myself. Hard to explain, but I don't exactly want to be a third wheel on the night. 3) My grades. Like I said earlier, my grades are quite good at the moment. Though the thought is becoming distracting when I should be focusing on other things, however. Plus, I don't want some unforseen reaction from people at school/family affecting my grades, and in turn myself, so close to my final high school exams and getting my UAI for university admission. I just don't want any problems/issues that may or may not arise from coming out affecting my end of schooling and then, ultimately, my future after that in terms of university courses, etc. Sorry for the lengthy question, but ultimately it boils down to - when considering the above concerns - should I come out before or after I graduate? Even if the thought is still playing on my mind until then if I choose not to...

Wait until after high school to officially "come out"--you can tell a few trusted friends now if you want, but don't actually be OUT until after high school. Wait to tell your family once you're attending a university. Regarding prom, do you have any female friends you can really trust? If so, come out to one of them and ask if she'd like to go to prom as friends. If the relationship with her was already platonic, it shouldn't matter if she knows you're gay.
2 :
you will know when the time is right it wont be a thought it will be a feeling until then try telling ur best friend and just remember your family may not seem homophobic but no one wants their child to be gay so it may take them awhile to wrap thierƂ  heads around the idea best of luck
3 :
If you can keep it to yourself or only to your family and close friends so much the better. Just come out when there's not more conflicts ahead.
4 :
It just depends on whether you think that you can do what you want when you are out of the closet, if you think it will interfere with school don't do it. If you can get over it and continue on with life then go for it, I would! :)

Naughtiest thing you ever did in high school

Naughtiest thing you ever did in high school?
Hi guys I'm writing something for uni based on high school experiences, especially in Australia and especially around the 15/16 year old mark. Does anyone have any stories they would be willing to share about what they got up to back then? Especially from people who were in high school in the late 90s. Thanks!

I never got into much trouble, only thing I ever got detention for was walking out of a science lesson with my mates and running off when the teacher came after us. In the early days of high school I also used to skive all the time, I'd either just decide to go home or I wouldn't go in at all and spend the whole day hanging about waiting until it was safe to go home again. I dreaded it that much.

School/Educational Laws, help

School/Educational Laws, help?
Hi, I was wondering if it is possible/impossible for a private/public school in Australia to dictate what subjects students can enter, and what they can't enter. For example, Can a school that has well over enough seats for Economics, eject students from classes when he/she hasn't even entered, by assuming/judging their future progress in the class ? - "I don't think you'll do well in Economics, so you can't do Economics." (In short) - This isn't me, but I have a problem which looms around the same question. Addition : If you're studying/studied law, and know any acts or regulations in which my situation complies in please tell me :D Thank you, Andrew EDIT : At Below, That is exactly what I wanted to hear and know Thank you, you saved me a lot of research time and in addition to that, my behind. Cheers.

In Australia, private/public schools cannot dictate what subjects students enter into, no matter how bad or good their grades are or future progress may be in that particular class. However, there may be certain pre-requisites that need to be met if a student were to enter in to a high-achieving subject. For example, a year 11 Maths B student may be able to enter into year 12 Maths C, while a year 11 Maths A student may not. However, schools can delete subjects if not enough students have elected to enter into their class - i.e. a Home Economics class may be canceled because only three students elected it from a particular grade. There are not any acts or regulations which really relate to this subject matter.

Americans - what do you learn in High School and College maths? +BQ

Americans - what do you learn in High School and College maths? +BQ?
Because whenever I watch a TV show and it shows them doing maths at college, they're doing like calculus and algebra and stuff you learn waaay before then. In Australia we start learning calculus in year 11 and master it in year 12, and algebra is like year 7 stuff. So I was just curious as to what you guys actually learn in High School and College maths. BQ: What is American college like? Is it like a second High School? In Australia we have one course that we follow, for example the Bachelor of Education, or the Bachelor of Psychology, and within that course we learn different things to do with that. Like in the Bachelor of Education, my sister would learn the basics of how to teach, and then choose electives on top of that, like PE, art, and teaching students with disabilities. But I've heard that in America it's more like a second High School, with different unrelated subjects like biology and literature, and you have one major or something. So what's it really like?
Other - Education - 1 Answers

High School progresses at the same rate as Australia, the only difference being students have some control over their courses in grades 9-12. Most students tend to take an easy route, staying away from the upper level maths (calc and trig). However, there are students who take those courses in high school (same as in Australia). College is like a second High School such that you don't simply focus on the single subject. For example, if you're going to college for Accounting, you'll learn accounting, but you are also required to take math, English, history, etc. other plus electives. The main reason for this is how poor the lower education system in America is (most students are not up to speed in these subjects when they reach college). Out of the standard 120 credits required to graduate from college, about 60 credits are electives and "General Education" courses. GenEds make up most of the first two years of college. There are technical schools that just teach the desired skill set (e.g. Accounting) and avoid all the GenEd courses, and that is why they tend to be looked down upon.

how do i make a lot of friends at my new school

how do i make a lot of friends at my new school?
so to keep it short, i moved from australia to florida, went to a private school for a year and hated it and only made a couple of friends, so im going to a new school next year. i went to a private school in australia too and had a lot of friends but people are different here. sooo how do i make lots of friends at my new public school? i love just having the small group of close friends too, but this year i want to have lots :) so i can hang out with all sorts of people, rather than the same ones every w/e. i know i've got to be confident and talk a lot, (never been fantaastic at that but i can try harder) anything elseee? i know this sounds kind of stupid, i just really want high school to be fun:) (i'm going into grade 9, and i want to have a huge sweet 16 at the end of the year, so im gonna need quiitee a few friends) thanks! :)

2 :
you said it. you actually literally need to get out there and start talking! look at what group of friends appeal to you most, and walk up to that group, and join in! just be like "hey!!" and once they hear that amazing australian accent you have, they'll be interested. trust me. lol, love your accent, mate. lol!! anyway, never sit there and expect people to come to you. be you, dress you, show people who YOU are. never dress like someone else. you're less likely to make friends. wear some that just SCREAMS (your name).
3 :
BE YOURSELF. even if you think that you are going to be alone it will turn out in the end
4 :
see what clubs or activities your new school offers and join...are you athletic...try out for the teams...sure way of meeting people
5 :
there was this new Mexican guy at our school, who had this amazing hispanic accent (and he was cute too)... and he just literally came up and started talking to us, and by the end of the week every girl was in love with him. Now I dont know how that will work seeing as how you're a girl, but you get my point. You just need to get in there and start talking to everybody. Pick a group of kids on the first day of school that look nice, set yourself down, introduce yourself and ask their names. Talk to the people who sit around you in class. And the Australian accent is a huge asset, trust me. I know it sounds shallow, but there will be people who will probably just start talking to you because your new and foriegn. Americans love foriegners (well, not the American immigrant kind haha). Its also a great ice breaker. People will ask about it and BAM you instantly have a conversation topic. If you play sports make sure you go out for the team. Just try to get around as much as possible and be gregarious. Be yourself, but make good first impressions. Don't be pretentious, don't be fake. Smile. Show genuine interest in people. Make friends with guys and girls. And most importantly, invite people over, especially if you have a pool ;)
6 :
The very best way to make friends is to be a friend. Please try to remember that high school is NOT just about having fun. It is a crucial time in your life and the gateway to the future. Sure you should enjoy yourself, but apply yourself to your studies or you will regret it for the rest of your life.
7 :
Get involved with lots of activities! Whatever interests you, sports, drama, youth group... meet people who have things in common with you.
8 :
Well, I moved from Austin to Pittsburgh and I made plenty of friends through after school activities like orchestra, tennis and latin club. After school activities are the best way to meet people because you have to intract with people, therefore you meet people which will eventually become your friends. *ADVICE: If you think a person might not be a good friend go with your feeling and don't be their friend because they will probably stabbbb you in the back. Good luck on your new year in public school & public school is soooo much more fun than private.

I think that you should take some classes that you know that some of your friends are not gonna be in so when you get to that classes there will be different ppl for you to interact with. Also talk to the friends that you do have there and try to hang out with some of their friends that your not friends with..... Or try different clubs at you school or try out for sports.... good luck with everything. Hopefully you make more friends.... and thanx for answering my question!

11 :
Hun its not about making lots of friends its about having a few close friends that you can trust..dont go and try to be ms.popular just be yourself and repspectfull and youll see which people fit you

i want to transfer from a school in austraila to in america but will i be too dumb?
I'm 15 and i go to a high school in australia. i suck at maths, everything to do with maths. i either fail or just get a C or even lower. but i want to go live with a family member who lives in california. but i'm scared that if i do. and i go to school there. will i be the dumbest kid there? because who knows... americans could be smarter then australians.. or they could be less smart? because of the school curriculum. i dont know anything about american schools at all. i heard they are really different from austrailian high schools. someone from america please help?

I am an American and attended University there, and I found that Australian schools were more difficult that American schools, however that might just be the University I attended (University of Queensland). It seems to me that Australian schools are very dependent upon examinations whereas American schools provide opportunities for all kinds of learners to succeed. I think you'll do just fine if you transfer to an American school; you most definitely won't be the dumbest kid here. You can't really generalize one nationality being smarter than another because both Australian culture as well as American culture is made up of so many different people and value so many different things that intelligence varies among all people.

Surf brands are very popular, Quiksilver, Ripcurl etc. Have a look at Summer Heights High on Youtube for some ideas of what school life is like.

The impression you make at school should be 'you'... who you are and not what other people want you to be. I understand you want to be liked... but what do you want the popular people to like you for? For being pretty, nice clothes and good times? Or something less shallow?
4 :
And if my kid had gone to your school, and spoke as appallingly as you do, I'd want them to go to a school in Sydney too. Not shallow. Pfft. Talking like that, you can't afford to be not shallow.

Future employment choice regarding school

Future employment choice regarding school?
At the moment im in Year 10 at school in Australia. I am unsure of what i am wanting to do regarding when i get older for a full time job with fairly good pay... and my parents have told me that i have to go to a trade school (school that is based on the training of a chosen occupation) so i can get ready for the future employment. But i am wanting to move and live in the United States and not sure if all qualifications are acceptable internationally (regulations different eg Certificate II Hospitality). Should i stay at school till the end of year 12 and then move over to the United States and do something (not sure). Please i need help on what to do... I only got till the end of the month to pick what i want to do for the future regarding a trade school... and i wouldn't be able to get good enough marks for university so i'm unsure... :S please respond quickly (sensible answers)

You will not be able to move to the USA and work there unless you have superior professional qualifications. A "Certificate in Hospitality" won't be enough.

It changes with government/catholic/private schools as their expectations and standards differ, but generally speaking they are all fairly intolerant of bad behaviour. I remember getting frequent detentions and suspended regularly, whilst not being a 'terrible' student
2 :
Usually it depends on the school. I got in a fight some kid a year ago and all i got was an afternoon detention and a note home, and i even started it. Swearing at a teacher will usually get you sent to the head of the department of what subject the teacher was teaching (EG: You swear at a science teacher you go to the head of science) That's my school though
3 :
most schools are intollerant of bad behaviour... but in my opinion punishments arent enough...bring back the cain :) but also depends weather you mean high scholl or primary... primary schools prob let a bit more go than what most high schools would, but at the same time high schools have alot more issues such as smoking, drugs, fights ect...
4 :
It really depends on the school, there are two types of schools here public and private. Public schools are usually less strict than private schools. Private schools are usually catholic/ religious thats why.
5 :
Im a student in australia at high school. I personally think its about the school like the others above me are saying. At my school though if you start a fight, in a fight, watching a fight, caught smoking, drugs etc you will be suspended for a minimal 3 days. I reckon my shool is good though on discipline :)
6 :
well depends on the school our system is pretty easy to get away with stuff, i must admit but i guess it just like any school although it would vary throughout school and state it has detention etc the worst i ever got was sent home for a week with no work yayyy!!! [i was a horrible student haha]

Everyones calling me gay at school

Everyones calling me gay at school?
I started a private school in Australia, its my first year, people are just calling me gay, i have only one best friend which supports me but nearly my whole school calls me gay, by the way my school is a all boy school, they say that i walk like a girl but my Friend says i don't, they tease my because, i put light foundation my face, now i can't make Friends, because other people are scared to be teased like me, life at school is getting very difficult for me, i once cried at the toilets and every time i get teased, my heart sinks and i feel so broke. People at my school also say that i look like a Girl, i don't know what to do, i say to myself that " if i tell the principle on the people who are constantly teasing me, they might be against me", also im not a socialized person, I don't defend myself when people tease me, i just walk away.

dude just become manly. and i learned when you start a new school, tip #1: NEVER CRY. that will make you seem like a wimp and sensitive. and gay
2 :
you probably are gay, own it and laugh
3 :
talk to a counselor or your parents. if this keeps going on it could get worse and they might get physical. maybe then your parents might let you switch schools. if not then just keep being who you are and don't let anybody bring you down. maybe if they see that they aren't getting to you they might stop. those kids are stupid and its not bad to care about the way you look. don't forget that problems will pass. soon you'll be out of school and these kids won't be around anymore.
4 :
whoaaa! they seriously need 2 stop they are just hating on you because they have nothing better to do with their lives, their losers and it doesn't matter if you put foundation on your face, many people do that at least where i'm from, i'm in new york. You should be able to express yourself in any way possible. their will always be mean people no matter where you go. just think this everytime "they have no life, so they're trying to find someone 2 pick on" and if it gets worse you should tell your parents ask them to take you 2 a girl and boy private school if they want u 2 be in a private school. Don't let these boys put you down cause their little "BOYS" just think of them as annoying little boys and your the man and if they keep bothering you just think -- soo.. it's not your (talking about these boys) problem so don't worry about it but thanks for caring because i know you have no life
5 :
You need to tell your parents or your teachers. Bullying isn't just annoying - it's illegal. There is nothing wrong with being gay if you are. If you are not, don't let it affect you. Who cares if they say that? Is it bad for them to think such stupid things? Let them be the ignorant piles of dog crap they are. You have the moral high ground: you are better than them. As for the idiotic first poster who said you shouldn't cry - there is nothing wrong with crying if you are upset. We all do it.
