is australia a country or a continent? what about oceania

is australia a country or a continent? what about oceania?
me and my house mates are having a huge discussion on this theme. some websites, including Wikipedia, give different definitions according to the language it was written in. we all come from different countries and were taught different in school. so basically, some know Australia(just the big mass part) is a continent in its own and the only country to occupy one entirely, others say its just a country in the continent of Australia. did anyone out there actually do geographic studies and can sort this whole thing out?

Currently according to the British, French, American and Chinese government, Australia is a country and Oceania is the continent. The Micronesian and the French Polynesian Islands belong to Oceania.
2 :
Its the only country continent. Although, Oceania is not technically a continent, it is an area which include the Australian continent, and some of its neighbors to the north west. Oceania is a region encompassing Austrailia and some of its neighbors. Australia is a continent and a country. New Zealand belongs to Australia the continent, not the country.

Australia is a Continent, Country and Island.

Depends on what you want to do. Accounting is accounting, but you have to be familiar with the Australian accounting laws which are different from the ones in the US. If you want to get into taxes, you wouldn't be successful because of your unfamiliarity unless you are really good at showing that you can pick it up easily. If you want a staff accountant's job, then all you ahve to prove is know your debits and credits and such. I suggest learning MYOB for starters - that's the primary accounting software package. If you need sponsorship for work - it will be a lot harder to find a job since Australia has plenty of accountants to work unless you want to go to an area that is away from the major cities. Accountants generally get paid in the 30K area, especially entry-level. You might get lucky and snag a 40K job; you might end up having a 28K job. It's all dependent on where and what kind of work

Fully-qualified accountants are currently in high demand throughout Australia. Book keepers, etc are not in such high demand however if you hold a residence visa you should be able to find a job. Pay will depend on your skills, qualifications and experience and also where you intend on working, a junior book keeper in Adelaide will earn considerably less than a fully qualified accountant in Sydney. If you have any visa related questions you can email me on answers@visalogic.net

I'm an accountant in Australia, Accounting Professionals are in one of the most demanded categories, in fact it is listed as one of the most wanted occupation to have high points attributed to it in the skill Immigration points system. If you look at the newspapers and websites jobs ads, you can find lots of accounting posotions at entry / intermidiate/ senior / management levels. With that said, a major area of Australian accounting work is in TAX, or tax related business advisoty services. You went to school in the US, you wouldn't be familiar with Australian Tax laws. Employer of Business Advisory services / Taxation type of jobs would prefer Australian bred accountants to you. But if your work in the areas of Auditing, it's different, as Auditing is more internationalised and we have hired people from Africa and Europe to work for us at senior positions. Also with the internationalising of the accounting standard, financial reporting type of work would also fit you if you work for bigger firms who has more financial reporting type of work for reporting entity clients. BUt if you are doing tax related type of work, you probably have to start at a entry level. Which level of Education have you attained? Are you a member of the USA CPA? if you are, you can get your qualifications Recognised by the Australian CAP or ICAA, you can transfer your membership to Australia by attending an AUstralian test, or attend bridging studies. That'll give you lots of plus in looking for a job, and essential if you want to go anywhere higher in that occupation. check CPA site for recognition info http://www.cpaaustralia.com.au/cps/rde/xchg/SID-3F57FEDF-DA704190/cpa/hs.xsl/803_4374_ENA_HTML.htm International Qualifying Exam -http://www.cpaaustralia.com.au/cps/rde/xchg/SID-3F57FEDF-DA704190/cpa/hs.xsl/800_8533_ENA_HTML.htm Check the ICAA site for recognition info http://www.icaa.org.au/about/index.cfm?menu=12&id=A105761026 I have no comment on the availability of bookkeeping type of jobs, because Accountants ARE NOT Bookkeeper, WE ARE Different. If you are thinking bookkeeping type of work, you would have to be familiar with softwares like MYOB, attache, quicken...etc, then you'd be pretty much alright. An working exprience and reference is more important than anything when my clients choose a bookkeeper. Accountant with a Bachelor degree can get around AUD$36,000 at entry level. You'd be encouraged to pursue membership with CPA Australia or Institute of Chartered accountants. IF you work reasonably ok, you are looking at a pay rise at around 10% per year, of course if you do better you get more. Many accountants with 3-5 years of expirience are getting around AUD $60k, while higher level accountants like CFO and Partners are getting around AUD$150k

Check with the big international accounting firms e.g. Pricewaterhouse Coopers and KPMG. They sometimes have Australian corporate clients with interests in the U.S. or U.S. citizen clients working in Oz.
