How come it is more socially acceptable for women to have earrings and not men

How come it is more socially acceptable for women to have earrings and not men?
Men who have earrings are considered dirty and cheap (Generally Speaking) in society. And in schools in Australia anyway, males are not allowed to wear earrings, yet it is totally acceptable for females. Why is this? @ Mike Gentiles no it is not as simple as that, if it was I wouldn't bother asking

Actually for most society nowadays: Man + Earrings = Gay! I know there are straight guys who wear earrings too but that's the general perception.

It's because earrings are seen as "feminine". Simple as that.

I wore diamonds in both ears at school

IDK it's cultural. Around here, it's okay for sailors to have on in the left ear - they used to have a golden one so if they would get thrown overboard and wash up somewhere, whoever found their body could pay for the funeral with that gold.

In the 1980s it was fashionable for men to get ear studs and rings. I had a gold and silver one, went in your left ear as the right ear was supposed to be "gay". a lot of my mates got them.

Because society has lead us to believe women should only wear earrings! If men wear them they're classed as feminine or wrong! Really there's no harm in what men wear really! It's just society tends to dictate what we should and shouldn't wear! If it wasn't for the trend setting brave people who don't care what people think we would never move away from old fashioned thinking and old stigmas about what's ok for women and not for men or vice versa xx I don't wear earrings myself I just don't wanna but there's no real harm done if men did really xx
