Popular living places in Sydney, Australia

Popular living places in Sydney, Australia?
Im considering moving to Sydney, Australia. The school I will be attending is in Crows Nest in North Sydney. Im looking for a area I could meet people in that is also close to the city but still a reasonable price for rentals as well as a safe neighborhood. Ive never been to Australia so any advice will be thankful!

Basically anywhere north of the harbour is a nice area, but also expensive. The Crows Nest, St Leonards and North Sydney areas are quite nice but high density mixed with office buildings. Lane Cove is more residential/medium density and would be a good choice. Chatswood is another option which is on the train line and has a lot of shopping centres (malls). If you want a really urban type environment stick to the North Sydney area. This whole area from Chatswood south to the harbour is known as the lower north shore area. If you need something a fair bit cheaper you need to head west, to West Ryde or Eastwood for example. The commute will be quite long from this area. http://www.realestate.com.au
