I thought it was weird because it's called college and they seem to be able to select a major?

College is where you can go after graduating from high school. You can go to college or university to continue your education.

In the UK college is where you go when you are aged 16-18 to study A-Levels, of which you usually pick 3 or 4. You study these for 2 years and then you can go onto university, although the school leaving age is 16.

College (university) in the US you must declare a major at a certain point or before you begin your coursework, but you can major in more than one field at a time. College is after High school.( Secondary School) Wikipedia calls it a degree awarding institution of higher learning.
